The Way of the Cross

By the sign of the cross...

Act of contrition.

Prayer:

Come, O Holy Spirit, enlight our spirit and light our heart, so that the meditation on the mysteries of the Son of God's Passion augments our humility and our devotion, as well as our love to the cross and our giving to the Father's will, the only way to reach the Resurrection and the Life. We beg you for Our Lord Jesus Christ.

1st Station: Jesus is comdemned to death.

So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas to them and, after he had Jesus scourged, handed him over to be crucified. [Mk 15, 15]

I have condemned you to death, Jesus. My work have accused you, my toughts and desires have testified against you. Like St Peter, I have denied You, not three times but everyday of my life. Forgive me, Lord.

Lord Jesus crucified,

have mercy on me.

Our Father. Hail Mary. Glory be.

2nd Station: Jesus takes up His cross.

And carrying the cross himself he went out to what is called the Place of the Skull, in hebrew, Golgotha.. [Jn 19, 17]

You take over your shoulders the cross I have made for You with my despicable sins. You take it on You to deliver me from them and open me the gate to everlasting life. You love me beyond any cross, and You teach me to love You beyond any cross.

Lord Jesus crucified,

have mercy on me.

Our Father. Hail Mary. Glory be.

3rd Station: Jesus falls the first time.

Yet it was our infirmities that he bore, our sufferings that he endured. [Is 53, 4a]

The weight of our sins and scorn knock you down. Our ingratitude beats your earthly body, but doesn't put out your divine love. You let the stone beat your face to show us that there is neither humiliation nor pain You wouldn't suffer for us.  And then, as You did to Lazaro, You tell yourself ¡come up!

Lord Jesus crucified,

have mercy on me.

Our Father. Hail Mary. Glory be.

4th Station: Jesus meets His Mother Mary.

All within me is in ferment, my heart recoils within me. There is no one to console me. [Lam 1, 20b.21a ]

“Mother, I die for those I give you as sons. I become Lamb for them, for the Love that burns within my divine Heart. Come with me to the altar, and love them I have loved them". "Son, thy will be done in me"

Lord Jesus crucified,

have mercy on me.

Our Father. Hail Mary. Glory be.

5th Station: Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus carry His cross.

They pressed into services a passer-by, Simon, a Cyrenian, to carry his cross. [Mk 15, 21a.21c]

Jesus, did the Cyrenian love You? Did He believe that You were God? Certainly he didn't want to carry your cross; but he took it, and helped God to redeem the world. Make me a Simon Cyrenian, Lord. Taught me to accomplish your will, even against my will. Thy Word be done in me.

Lord Jesus crucified,

have mercy on me.

Our Father. Hail Mary. Glory be.

6th Station: Veronica wipes the faces of Jesus with her veil.

Many were amazed at him - so marred was his look beyond that of man, and his appearance beyond that of mortals. [Is 52, 14]

Lord, I have nothing to console You, but my heart. I offer it to You as  a veil. Stamp your holy face on it and let it soak up your precious blood. May I don't be mine, but yours.

Lord Jesus crucified,

have mercy on me.

Our Father. Hail Mary. Glory be.

7th Station: Jesus falls the second time.

Though he was harshly treated, he submitted and opened not his mouth; like a lamb led to the slaughter or a sheep before the shearers, he was silent and opened not his mouth [Is 53, 7]

Also I have fallen again, a thousand times, commiting the same mistakes and sins. You know the weakness of man, forgive me, Lord. You were abandoned on the ground, teach me to look at heaven hopefully. You came up again when no one could expect it, teach me to came up trusting your Mercy.

Lord Jesus crucified,

have mercy on me.

Our Father. Hail Mary. Glory be.

8th Station: the women of Jerusalem weep for Christ.

Jesus turned to them and said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me;weep instead for yourselves and for your children". [Lk 23, 28]

"Don't weep for Me, weep instead for you. I embrace the death for you to have life; I accept my Father's will, and die for love. But, how long will you be despising my Mercy? How long will your sins be shouting 'crucify him'? How long will you be looking at me from the distance, instead of taking my cross and marching beside me to the Calvary?”

Lord Jesus crucified,

have mercy on me.

Our Father. Hail Mary. Glory be.

9th Stationb: Jesus falls the third time.

But the Lord laid upon him the guilt of us all. [Is 53, 6b]

Die!,  shouts the sinful humankind. Die! Shouts this impious generation.  Die! Shout my sins and my dark life. And you falls again. But You must be sacrified on the cross, offering your merciful face to those who kill You; so you come up again. By yourself? No. It is not your human strenght but your divine Love that burns within your Heart which takes your body up, so that You can finish your way to the cross.

Lord Jesus crucified,

have mercy on me.

Our Father. Hail Mary. Glory be.

10th Station: Jesus is stripped of His clothes.

They divided his garments casting lots for them to see what each should take. [Mk 15, 24]

"Behold my Body and Blood, given for your redemption - nothing hides them. The world took my garments; so I give you the rest: my Body and Blood, my Soul and my Divinity. And, until I embrace you in Heaven, this way You will find me in the Eucharist: naked and given.”

Lord Jesus crucified,

have mercy on me.

Our Father. Hail Mary. Glory be.

11th Station: Jesus is nailed to the cross.

Like water my life drains away; all my bones grow soft. My heart has become like wax, it melts away within me. As dry as a potsherd is my throat; my tongue sticks to my palate; you lay me in the dust of death. Many dogs surround me; a pack of evildoers closes in on me. [Ps 22, 15-17]

"Whosoever wants to come after me, take his cross and follow be" You tell me, Lord. But there are blood, sweat and thorns on your cross;  I see the scorn of the world on it , and that frightens me.  However, You have conquered the world. And, during your agony, you give us the Queen of Heaven as mother ("Woman, behold your son"), intercede on behalf of us before the Father  ("forgive them, they know not what they do"), claim our soul with thirsty love ("I thirst") and open us the gates of your Kingdom ("today you will be with me in Paradise") I understand, Lord - your yoke is easy, and your burden light.

Lord Jesus crucified,

have mercy on me.

Our Father. Hail Mary. Glory be.

12th Station: Jesus dies on the cross.

There was a eclipse of the sun Then the veil of the temple was torn down the middle. Jesus cried out in loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit", and when he has said this he breathed his last. [Lk 23, 45-46]

“It is finished”. “If the grain doesn't fall on the ground and dies, it produces no fruits”. My God, I accept the death you want to send me, with all the solitude, darkness and sorrow that come with it. May it be for your glory, Lord, and may I love You, totally given to Your Will, with the last beat of my heart.

Lord Jesus crucified,

have mercy on me.

Our Father. Hail Mary. Glory be.

13th Station: Jesus in her Mother's arms.

I opened to my lover - but my lover had departed, gone. I sought him but I did not find him; I called to him but he did not answer me. [Sng 5, 6]

“I am the Way, the Truth and the Life”, says the Lord. But, for those whom He loves most tenderly, the way is harder, the truth is more silent, the life is more hidden. Yes, Mary, your sorrow will blossom as power; your tears, as gifts; your wounds, as treasures of grace. Pray for us, Mother.

Lord Jesus crucified,

have mercy on me.

Our Father. Hail Mary. Glory be.

14th Station: Jesus is placed in the tomb.

Because of his afliction, he shall see the light in fullness of days. [Is 53, 11a]

"I have satisfied God's Justice and Love. Now, my humanity is quiet until my divinity is showed. Don't seek me on earth, because my Kingdom does not belong to this world. Die with me, and I will raise you because I AM THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE”.

Lord Jesus crucified,

have mercy on me.

Our Father. Hail Mary. Glory be.

For the Holy Father's intentions :

Our Father. Hail Mary. Glory be.

Prayer:

Virgin Mary, Mother of us, who offered God your only good, sacrified and held in your arms, teach us to carry on with love the cross that the Lord has given us, so that we can reach, by means of our total giving to his Providence, the joy of Resurrection. Amen.

                                                             Laus Deo Virginique Matri.
